“We travel because we need to, because distance and difference are the secret tonic of creativity. When we get home, home is still the same. But something in our mind has been changed, and that changes everything.” -Jonah Lehrer
From D.I.N.K.* to Z.I.N.K., we are a couple in our early 30s pausing our “normal” lives for a year to seek adventure, meet new people, and eat great food. Up until now, both of us followed the fairly conventional path of yuppies**: go to a good school, get a good job, save money, and work your way up the ladder. Although we had generous vacation days, we wanted to immerse ourselves in the world’s cultures without feeling like we needed a vacation from the never-long-enough vacation we just took.

We met on a blind date, introduced by an app called Coffee Meets Bagel. The overcast drizzle paused while we shopped at the Saturday farmer’s market. When we parted ways, we hadn’t been hit with cupid’s arrow and it wasn’t madly in love at first sight. So, while first impressions are important, they should be taken with a grain of salt. 😉
Two years after we met, we quit our jobs to tour the world. This included selling all our furniture and squeezing the rest of our belongings into boxes to store in the garages of generous friends and family.
Along our trip, we see the must-sees and do the must-dos, but we also like to visit McDonald’s (or Macca’s as the Aussies and Kiwis call it) to see what’s different on the local menu, swing by the Starbucks to check out their You Are Here mug designs, but most importantly, stop whenever there’s a queue of locals gathered and try to taste whatever they’re eating. We love to share our favorite finds and wanted a place to record our adventure of a lifetime, so we hope what you find here is both informational and inspiring.
Welcome to our third year!
